Matt is Number One

Matt Clifford (year three) points out that his blog is in the top one million worldwide. And he can prove it...

There is a really good site called My Page Rank Net - and I used it to analyse Matt's site - it confirms the 800,000 k Alexa and also shows that Matt's site has gained a google page rank of one - that's a good start. It also shows the number of pages (or blog posts) the Google spiders have included in the google index. Importantly you can use this site to see when the spiders last visited and indexed your site (nothing you put on your blog will be available to google searchers until the robots have put it into the index - so you want the robots/spiders to come as often as possible).

From the above you can see that Matt's blog has a page rank (PR) of one. This means that in the google index his blog will return higher (SERPS) for key words/search terms he has metatagged than a blog which has PR 0. But it will return lower than a blog with PR 2 (or 3, 4 etc).

GIP = 153 (Google Indexed Pagess) this means that 153 'pages' (presumably blog posts) have been placed in the google index according to the metatags / tags on the each individual blog post.

GBL = 0 (Google Back Links). Google has a (secret) list of golden sites (such as the BBC or the UK government) IF you get one of these links (Google Back Link) this really adds to your page rank. This is because Google thinks that its Golfen sites only link to valuable sites (and not to porn sites or sites which are not what they say they are).

YIP = 1 (Yahoo Indexed pages). The Yahoo Search Engine has found its way to the site (eg by following a link from Winchester Journalism) and has put just the front page of Matt's blog into its index. It is worth being in the Yahoo index (responsible for about 10 percent of all searches on the web). But you have to SUBMIT to the Yahoo directory (more about this in the forthcoming notes on search engine submission).

YBL= 20 (Yahoo Back Links) Unlike Google Yahoo counts all links to your site (not just premium ones). So any links at all count for Yahoo - this is why it is easier/quicker to get good SERPS from Yahoo than from Google. But it is google that counts.

MIP = (Microsoft Indexed Pages). This is zero it means that Matt's site is not indexed in the BING! search engine (a small one about 5percent of all searches). It is worth being in this index though because Google checks it to see if you are serious. So SUBMIT your site to MSN/Bing. (There's dozens of other smaller search engines that you could also submit to, if you have time. It all helps - probably - especially for something small like a blog where a small advantage over your rival makes a big difference in SERPS.

ALR = Alexa Rank - as discussed MAtt's blog is in the top 850,000 in the world. V. good for a student blog.

ABL = Alexa Back Links - Alexa also counts links - it is less permissiove than Yahoo; more permissive than Google. One of those ABLs will be Winchester Journalism, for sure.

(all the rest of terms here are less important).

Why has google given Matt page rank? The fact that Winchester Journalism links to him is important because Winchester Journalism has a PR of 3 for most of its pages and a PR of 4 for some (this has increased from zero 10 months ago when it was set up). Links from higher ranking pages give your own blog high page rank. If you can get a link from a PR page of 10 (like say the BBC front page) then your page rank will go up. Getting valuable links to your blog is hard work (the hardest thing in SEO) but there are a few tips I can give you. Winchester Journalism has gone from zero to PR 3 or 4 in 10 months. Time is factor - another reason why Matt has got rank is that he has been operating the blog at this URL for I think a couple of year and - importantly - he has been updating it frequently, the spiders notice that and have upgraded it. The same spiders will now wait for another six months and if they notice it is still being updated will probably push up the page rank to PR. That will mean more searchers will find the blog via Google, searching for Matt's metatags. Note that the best likely link to your blog at the moment is Winchester Journalism - so the more PR Winchester Journalism gets, the higher SERPS for your own blog will be. I will post some notes on how to increase PR in due course.

Another factor in page rank is the number of subscribers or followers Matt has. Some of the first year blogs (even though they were set up more recently) have reached PR 1 already, that's because the first years tend to subscribe to each other's blogs - they do this more than the second adn third years and so their page rank and traffic willbigger quicker. The lesson is to subscribe to other blogs, and in return get them to subscribe to you in return (this is called link exchange).

Why's Matt's traffic high - could be that he has got facebook links to his blogs. He is blogging much more populist things like music. But this will cut against the 'purity factor' - see the post above. He ought really to set up a second blog and move his music stuff to that. The two blogs separately will gain more PR and traffic when they are added together. The more blogs you have the better as far as google spiders are concerned - BUT - do not set up blogs JUST to linbk to your blog. Yahoo won't spot that but Google will -and they will add PENALTIES and even remove you from their index entirely. So if you set up a second or this blog you will need to update them both, frequently. That's all for now - the next installment will be about search engine submission.
